Patrick Newman
Economist and economic historian · Cronyism

Patrick Newman is an American economist. He earned his PhD in the Department of Economics at George Mason University. He is an assistant teaching professor of economics at the University of Tampa and the Murray N. Rothbard Research Fellow at the Mises Institute. His research interests are macroeconomics, monetary policy, economic history and cronyism, that is, the privileges enjoyed by those with access to political power.
For the Mises Institute he edited two previously unpublished historical works by Murray N. Rothbard: The Progressive Era (2017) and the fifth volume of Conceived in Liberty, The New Republic, 1784–1791 (2019). In Cronyism: Liberty Versus Power in Early America, 1607–1849 (2021) he examined how the free-market parties, first Jefferson’s Republicans and then Jackson’s Democrats, tried to limit the state and failed. Its sequel, Cronyism: Rise of the Corporatist State, 1849–1929 (2026), describes the birth of the “corporatist state,” a system of cartels and monopolies enforced by the state. He argues that the interests that sought state protection did so because their cartels had failed on the free market under the pressure of competition.
With Joseph T. Salerno he wrote the intellectual biography Murray N. Rothbard: The Making of an Austrian Economist (2026), which follows Rothbard’s path from neoclassical graduate student to the writing of Man, Economy, and State.
